The many faces of Doctor Who


The 11 actors who have played the lead role in Doctor Who are sometimes divided into two categories by fans: those who play the role as an exaggerated extension of their own personality, and those who entirely fabricate a "Doctorish persona" to inhabit. Arguments over which "Who" falls into which category can rage long and hard. Further complicating matters is the current Doctor, Matt Smith, who appears to be both.

Transported by tunes of the Tardis


IT IS one of the most recognised theme tunes, with its galloping bass line, whooshing electronics, sinister hissing and hair-prickling sonic scream, the music of Doctor Who has hypnotised viewers for decades. Forty years after Australian composer Ron Grainer scribbled the first notes on a piece of paper and sent it to the BBC, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra brings the music to life in the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular, based on the success of a similar show at the 2010 London Proms.

Karen quits the Tardis
