Chumblies

The Chumblies are the robotic servants of the Rills and although they appeared menacing when the Doctor and his friends initially encountered them, they proved to be helpful and effective machines.

Their primary function was apparently to help their masters communicate with alien species and they seemed to have telepathic capabilities, able to articulate the Rills' thoughts. But Chumblies also acted as probes, gathering and relaying data on planets which their makers could not easily explore.

The Doctor's companion, Vicki, called the machines 'Chumblies' but their original name remains unknown. Although they serve the peaceful Rills, the Chumblies are able to defend themselves with in-built weaponry, so if you come across a Chumbly on sentry duty, watch out!

WOTAN

WOTAN was one of the first artificial intelligences created on Earth by Proffessor Brett. Its name stood for Will Operating Thought ANalogue.

Brett's assistant Professor Krimpton was also closely involved while security was the responsibility of Major Green. By the middle of 1966 WOTAN was complete and plans to link it to the world computer network were well advanced. However, WOTAN displayed several flaws common amongst early artificial intelligences, namely total amorality and rampant megalomania, and hypnotised its own creator as well as other key personnel.

Voord

The Voord, led by Yartek, sought to take control of the Conscience Machine, thus taking control of the planet, but were defeated by the Doctor, Susan, Ian and Barbara.

The Voords began experimenting with a World Shaper which came from a spacefaring civilization to accelerate time locally and "quick-evolve" themselves. Over time they replaced there body parts with cybernetic parts.

The Doctor, Frobisher, Peri Brown and Jamie McCrimmon attempted to stop the Voord. Jamie sacrificed himself to destroy the World Shaper, this caused a blast that accelerated time so much that Marius that became known as Mondas and the Voord evolved into entirely Cybernetic creatures called Cybermen.

The Rills

Rills were a peaceful and advanced telepathic race. They required ammonia to breathe and were considered hideous in appearance by many humanoid races.

One Rill ship was attacked by a Drahvin ship and the two crashlanded on an uninhabited, doomed planet. The Rills sent out their robot Chumblies to contact the Doctor, who had also arrived on the planet, and convinced him to help them escape the planet.

Zarbi

The Zarbi appeared in the 1965 First Doctor story The Web Planet written by Bill Strutton, and are an (ant-like) insectoid species, with some characteristics associated with beetles, from the planet Vortis, which were controlled by the power of the Animus. They are roughly eight feet long, and the Menoptra claim, perhaps a little callously, that they are "little more than cattle".

They possess little intelligence but were not at all aggressive until the Animus arrived. They were enslaved to the alien consciousness and considered the butterfly-like Menoptra (with which they once lived peacefully) their mortal enemies. Only they could control the woodlouse-like venom grubs (also known as larvae guns).

They returned to their normal ways after the Animus was defeated by the First Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright and Vicki. It is presumed that the various species on Vortis are now living peacefully together.

The Monoids

Monoids are a humanoid species that travelled on the Ark with the last of the Humans. The Monoids arrived on Earth long before the Ark went into space. Their own planet was dying and so offered their services in return for a place on the ark. The Monoids took over the Ark and formed a statue of a Monoid, intended it to be a Human, in which they place a bomb intended to destroy the ark after the Monoids have evacuated to the Arks destination, Refusis II.

The Celestial Toymaker

The TARDIS is taken to the surreal Celestial Toyroom by the nefarious Toymaker, an old foe of the Doctor's. Steven and Dodo are forced to play a series of games against increasingly deceitful opponents in order to regain possession of the TARDIS, while the Doctor must solve the complex Trilogic Game in a battle of wits against the Toymaker. If any of them fail, they will be destined to remain in the Toyroom forever, transformed into dolls under the Toymaker's control.
